Benefits of Speaking in Tongues

PART TWO

Important:  This note is from the teacher of Section 1. The teaching that follows is from Section 2 and is a general teaching of the topic but does get into specific benefits of this manifestation.  It is important for you to understand the two different teachings on a similar  subject.  I encourage you to first read, from Section 1, the teaching that is called The Benefits and Purpose of True Worship. (10/28/2012) It is listed under the Table of Contents – ADVANCED STUDIES.  This teaching will help you a great deal to understand the 12 benefits of speaking in tongues since they are spelled out in numerical order.  Also note that the teaching from section 1 was completed in 2012.  Our teaching below was completed in 1969.  That’s a 43 year difference.  You will be able to see that the Word of God is the same yesterday, today and forever.  It’s truth is eternal.  It does not change.

Three things we’ve already read that speaking in tongues does.  It edifies us spiritually.  It builds us up on our most holy faith.  It is to speak divine secrets, mysteries, between God and His spirit which is in Christ in you.

I want to tell you that’s one thing Satan can’t get his nose in.  You can’t make up speaking in tongues.  You can’t fake it like that.  That’s impossible because it’s God, who is spirit, who has to give it to your spirit and God’s not stupid.  And He says that when you do it, you are speaking divine mysteries.  Anything that’s in the senses realm, Satan can get his nose into.  Anything which is between the true God and His spirit which is in you, Satan can’t get his nose into it, it’s impossible.  That’s right.  That’s why you and Father can talk things over - you can get edified spiritually and old Satan can’t stop you.  He can only stop you as long as he can get you to stop speaking in tongues.  But God can’t stop you from speaking in tongues, but He can slow you down a bit.  He can’t stop you from going to heaven if you’re born again of God’s spirit.  But you can sure have a miserable trip in route.  You can just be as negative as the unbelievers, you can just be as full of fear as the people outside of Christ.  Everything else, and just be miserable going to heaven.  In Acts 2: 11

Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.  – Acts 2: 11

That’s what they marveled at.  Because it says in verse 4:

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. – Acts 2: 4

Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, ……. Acts 2: 6a

And they were all amazed [shook, flabbergasted] and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? – Acts 2: 7

Then how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? – Acts 2: 8

*** Please see verses 9 and 10 of Acts chapter 2 which lists all of the different groups that were present at this time.

Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. – Acts 2: 11

So whenever a person speaks in tongues, he is speaking the wonderful works of God.  Amen.  That’s what it says, that’s what it means.  To speak the wonderful works of God.  Because your speaking the divine mysteries, secrets.  That’s why it’s spoken of as the wonderful works of God.

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. – Acts 10: 44

At the household of Cornelius, while Peter was yet speaking, the spirit fell on them which heard the Word.

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. – Acts 10: 45

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.  Then answered Peter, -- Acts 10: 46

They heard them speaking with tongues, and as they were speaking with tongues, were they cursing God?  No, they were magnifying God.  They were praising the Lord.  They were glorifying Him for everything that God did in Christ and everything else that goes with it.  That’s speaking in tongues.  Not only does it edify you, but it’s used to speak divine secrets, it is to speak the wonderful works of God, it is to magnify God.  Certainly every Christian should want to be doing these things.  Right?  And people, verse 45, it’s tremendous.  And on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift, the gift, the gift, the gift.  That’s the key.  The gift.  If I gave you this pen tonight as a gift, you can pray until you’re blue in the face, it will not turn out to be a Cadillac.  Why?  Because, everything after its kind.  It’s a gift.  It’s a pen – it will be a pen tomorrow.  On the Gentiles also was poured out the Holy Spirit, the gift, the gift, the gift.  If I gave this to Sandy tonight, who would be responsible for it after she got it?  Sandy would.  Is she going to ride it home?  No. C’mon.  It’s a pen.  And most likely she won’t even pick her teeth with it.

How simple and how we’ve been fooled.  We’ve always thought it was God’s responsibility to push us, you know.  If God wants me to speak in tongues, He’ll see that I do it.  The heck He will.  That’s right, He won’t either.  You know why?  He’s given you the gift.  If there is going to be any speaking in tongues, who’s going to do it?  You are, because you got the gift, you have to operate it.  If you don’t  operate it, it will never come into manifestation.  It’s like saying the same thing, if God wants me to say it, He’ll see that I get saved because he’ll wallop me good and proper until he gets me in line.  No.  Whosoever will may be saved.  God gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth, he will be saved.  If we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  That’s right.  He is not going to be running around hitting people in the head and saying come on in here and get saved.  No, no, no.  He’s given it as a gift.  That’s right.

Some of the things that I mean when you hear me teach in the classes, I am responsible for its utilization.  I have this pen and I decide I’m never going to write with it.  You’re never going to get a letter from me, nor is anybody else, right?  Because I have made the decision not to write with it.  Do I have the ability?  Sure do, I have the gift, I can write with it, but I don’t want to.  People like this in the spirit field.  God’s not going to wallop you into it.  When I teach these classes, I would say to my people.  Well, boy, if you want to go to hell, go ahead.  That’s right.  People used to get so mad because they thought I didn’t have any love.  I‘ve got more love in my little finger than most people have in their whole lousy body.  Because the only love that they have is usually some smothered type of thing.  Patting the man on the shoulders or on the back when you ought to pat him a foot lower.  Love is the Word.  Love is what the Word says.  And it’s not love to tell somebody who is going to heaven, I mean hell, just keep on going because you’re going to wind up in heaven, because you’re such a good fellow, you built the hospital down here and God just got to give you a special place in heaven.  What for?  He built the hospital.  I’ll give him a special place in the hospital.

It’s a gift.  It’s a gift, right?  Boy, that makes me responsible for its utilization.  Isn’t that lovely?  Boy, the reason I always get cranked up on this and really excited is because I know the other field - the spiritualist field - the ESP categories.  I know all that and in that field nobody operates by freedom of will, they operate by possession, by control.  When old Arthur Ford wants to talk to nincompoop who is up there in Canada someplace, old Arthur has to pass out and that guy takes over.  Oh, people some day, we’re just going to have to love Jesus. That’s all.  For what he did for us in giving us his gift.  Under free will, so that I by my will I freely utilize that gift.  Boy, what a tremendous thing.  That’s Power for Abundant Living coming down.  Oh, it’s wonderful isn’t it?  The Word, I mean.  Boy, oh boy.  Look at Romans chapter 8, Verse 26.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: [infirmity should be in the singular not the plural] for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:  [that is our infirmity]  but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  – Romans 8: 26

The greatest infirmity that we as believers, born-again Christians is that we do not know what we should pray for as we ought.  That’s the infirmity.  But, in contrast, the spirit which helpeth our infirmity, the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  The infirmity of verse 26 is that we do not know sense knowledge wise what to pray for.  But God, being spirit and his spirit in me and my being a part of the world and society here and in the light of my fellow believers.  Then when I speak in tongues to the Father and He backs me up this way, I can make intercession via the spirit for the believers with groanings which cannot be uttered.  Do you think that spirit of God within me knows the score?  It sure does.  But when I pray with my senses mind, I could be off.  If I were going to pray for a brother and I lifted him sense knowledge wise, the only prayer that I could really pray, knowing the Word, would I just thank God for his life.  I would thank God for his salvation.  I would thank God for his faithfulness to the Word, for his growth in the Word, how he is still growing day by day.  But I could not pray for that man sense knowledge wise because I don’t know if he has flat feet or ear trouble.  If he told me, I would know but even his telling me could be wrong.  Because many times the cause is far removed from the symptoms.  You’ve got a headache and its because of rotten pie in your stomach.  Far removed from the cause.  Spiritually, the same thing is true.

People, the greatest level of prayer we have is to pray in the spirit.  It always makes intercession – its always a perfect prayer.  And when I spiritually am sober, which simply means when I am gelling and really walking, when people call, if I pray for them with my understanding, it will simply be a prayer of thanksgiving, but as soon as I can, I pray for them in the spirit and it never fails.  For it says again in verse 26:

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity: [infirmity should be in the singular not the plural] for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:  [that is our infirmity]  but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  – Romans 8: 26

And he [God] that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is  the mind of the spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of  God. – Romans 8: 27

And we know that all things work together for good [if we pray in the spirit] to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his  purpose. – Romans 8: 28

Things work out for good if we speak in tongues.  Everybody takes that verse 28 out of context.  Here Kathy gets knocked off down on that bus and someone will come along and say, boy she didn’t get killed.  The Word says all things work together for good to them that love God.  That verse doesn’t mean that at all.  All things maybe work together for good in her situation, yours or mine, but that verse, don’t mess  it up, talking about people who are speaking in the tongues, praying in the spirit and if they, go to verse 27 -- make intercession for the saints according to God, then doing this, all those things will work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.  Who are speaking in tongues.  How can you love God and tell Him you are not going to speak in tongues?  How can you say you are Christian and you love God and be totally disobedient to the vast majority of His Word?

For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. – I Corinthians 14: 17

If you properly understand it and read it, here’s a person inside of the church who shouldn’t have been speaking out loud, because in verse 17, talking about the man who spoke in tongues, but he didn’t interpret, for thou verily givest thanks but the other is not edified.  The other person inside the body of believers is not edified because if I spoke in tongues all of the time, I would be out of order, yet I would be edified.  I would be edified for thou verily givest thanks well.  So speaking in tongues is not only to be edified, it’s to give thanks well.  You see, speaking in tongues is a two-way street.  If I called you on the phone and I spoke to Norm DeWitt, does that mean I did all the talking?  If I called the president of the United States and I said to you, I spoke to the president of the United States, would that mean that I did all of the talking?  Or does the word speech involve a two-way communication?  Mostly, if I called Norm on the phone, Norm would at least have to say Hello or I wouldn’t know it was he.  If I called the President, if he answered, he would have to at least say Hello, wouldn’t he?  You see, speaking in tongues is just not my doing one thing -- it is God giving it back.  Works this way.

Now.  All of this I’m teaching you is not new.  It’s been in your syllabus, it’s in every class on the Holy Spirit that you’ve taken or that I teach.  It’s in the film, it’s on the tape, it’s common knowledge.  Now go to Romans 8.  That’s a good book – – a good chapter.  Boy, you read this to people, unless they’ve really dug the word a little bit, they get all shook.  Romans 8: 16

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: -- Romans 8: 16

What proof do you have that you’re a child of God?  You haven’t got any proof at all until you hear yourself speak in a tongue.  You say, oh my Bible says if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus, believe God raised him from the dead, I’m saved.  That’s right, that’s what he said, but what proof you’ve got it’s true?  You haven’t.  Until you hear yourself speak in a tongue.  When you speak in tongues, then you’ve got the proof in the senses world that you got the real McCoy, Christ in you, the hope of glory, on the inside.  That’s the proof.  Boy, that’s what turned me on.  I then had proof that I had Christ within.  The reality of his presence, then, next day I was out riding in an automobile, I spoke in tongues.   Christ was still there.  I went in some heathen temple in India, I spoke in tongues, he was still there.  I went in some heathen church in the United States, spoke in tongues, still there.  Ended up in a tavern one night, a nightclub, people, he’s still there.  Man, what a reality.  And before I knew this, I used to wonder about my salvation every 15 seconds, you know?  Every time I’d have a nasty thought, wonder if I ought to go back down and get cleaned up.  You know -- altar.  If I had to go that much all the time, the carpet would be worn out.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: -- Romans 8: 16

Amen, boy.  Naturally on earth and sense knowledge wise, I am the son of my father and my mother.  I am their son.  But when I am born again of God spirit, I am whose son spiritually?  God’s son.  Well, praise the Lord.  And it’s His spirit bearing witness with the spirit that’s within me that I’m His child.  Every time I speak in tongues, I got the witness.  Well, what about verse 17?

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint--heirs with Christ; -- Romans 8: 17a

Well, hallelujah.  Man oh man.  That makes me a somebody.  That’s right.  That makes you a somebody.  Just imagine being a joint heir with Jesus Christ.  Boy, Satan has sure talked us out of that one, hasn’t he?  Because we are supposed to be the optimization of all humility and do you know what they mean by humility  - walk over you.  That’s what they mean.  You know, put you down like that.  Make you feel bad.  Walk over you.  Slap you in the face.  And then they say well, if they hit you on the left cheek, turn the other cheek.  Sock him in the jaw.  The Word.  My goodness sakes, if you’re a joint heir with Christ, do you have a little power?  I didn’t write the Word.  I didn’t die for you.  I didn’t give my life for you.  I bleed it out half the time for you.  But he laid down his life that you can be saved.  And you’re a joint heir with him.  That means it’s shared all the way through.  Boy oh boy, if the church even saw that much, they’d turn on, wouldn’t they?  Just to think, just to think that right now while you’re sitting there, you’re a joint heir with Christ.  Boy, that thing just gets to me.  It just tears me up inside.  It just bubbles - glows.  It’s just tremendous.  To know that I am a joint heir with Christ.  Every time I hear myself speak in tongues, I know I am a joint heir with him.  Ephesians 3: 16

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man: -- Ephesians 3: 16

To be strengthened with might by the spirit in the inner man.  The inner man is Christ in you, the hope of glory.  That Christ in you is spirit, now how are you going to feed that spirit?  You’re going to be strengthened with might in the inner man.  By the spirit, by the spirit.  By the spirit then must mean from putting Corinthians and the rest of it with it, that when you and I speak in tongues, which is to do this by the spirit, then the inner man is strengthened, built up, edified.  And certainly all of us today, who are in this walk together need that edification.  We need to grow in knowledge and grace, we need to develop ourselves.  Now some of us have worked pretty good on developing the Word in our mind.  We’ve worked hard on putting the Word up here, but we haven’t worked hard enough in speaking in tongues in our private life as well as our public one and interpreting to become real versatile in the usage thereof.  You can put this Word of God in your mind from now on until doomsday and it doesn’t feed the spirit in you.  It will feed your mind, but it will not feed the spirit.  And God wanted children who would be fed spiritually as well as physically and mentally.  We are to be a whole man, mentally, physically, spiritually and every other category.  This is what Christ came for.  You know in the gospel of John.  I just thought of this.  Here’s a verse of Scripture that really blessed my soul and opened up a lot of floodgates for His wonderful Word.  In John 7: 38.

He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly [the innermost part of his being] shall flow rivers of living water.  John 7: 38

(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive [lambano - into manifestation]; for the Holy Ghost [pneuma spirit] was not yet given;  because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) – John 7: 39

Therefore, whatever he said about verse 38 had to be future, which it was.  That for everyone who would believe on him after he was glorified, ascended up to heaven and 10 days later was the day of Pentecost.  That everybody who would then believe on him, out of his belly shall flow, out of his innermost being should flow.  Not a trickle, but rivers of living water.  The word flow means the flowing of speaking in tongues.  You don’t just trickle when you speak in tongues, you bubble, you let it flow, you effervesce.  You just don’t say a few words in tongues and 15 minutes later, you say the last word in tongues.  That’s trickling.  That’s hardly a trickle, because you get dry in between spells.  Out of his innermost being shall flow abundantly this speaking in tongues.  It’s not something comes in from the outside, it’s something you give out from the inside.  Out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water, effervescent, they don’t trickle, they flow.  That’s what the Word says.  You know why they are able to do that?  Because they move their lips, their throat, their tongue.  They made the sounds, they made the words, but the words which they made were as the spirit put it upon them.  They moved their lips properly, they moved their tongue.  Why, you do that to speak English.  Boy, this is a tremendous Scripture.  Most people think that when they receive the Holy Spirit, they get something in, you know.  Pentecostal - assembly bunch.  Second work of grace or third one, I don’t know which.  The added blessing – it comes in.  It doesn’t.  When Christ came in, you got everything you’re ever going to get.  It’s something more coming out of you, that’s all.  It’s already in there, the gift is there.  The speaking in tongues is your job, you do it.  You let it flow.  You determine whether it trickles or flows.  The Word says “out of their bellies shall flow.”  Absolutely.  It’s got to flow this way when you really gel the Word.  Go to Luke 11: 9.  You know in verse 9 it says - I say unto you, walk up to the window and demand payment on the check.  That’s the word Ask (demand).  The reason you can demand payment on the check is because you have money deposited there and you can have  it.

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. – Luke 11: 9

The word ’shall’ means absolutely.

For every one that asketh receiveth and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  – Luke 11: 10

Receiveth is referring to the man that walks up to the window and demands payment on the check.  He lambano(s).  He receives it into manifestation.  But you and I have to walk up to the window and say ‘daddy, I want this check cashed.’

He that seeketh findeth.  No ifs ands or buts about it.  Has anybody ever been hungry spiritually whom God has not satisfied?  The Word says they that hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled.  But if they just act like they’re hungering and thirsting and never get filled, the proof is they weren’t hungering and thirsting.  They just act like it, you know.  Counterfeit - blow.  And him that knocketh, it shall be opened.

If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone?  Or if he ask  a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? – Luke 11: 11

Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? – Luke 11: 12

If ye [ye who? Fathers who have hungry children] then, being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children:  how much more shall your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? – Luke 11: 13

Walk up to the window and cash it in.  Isn’t that wonderful?  Well, I am an earthly father and if I had bread tonight, and my son was hungry and I had bread, would I give him bread?  And I am an evil father.  I don’t always do what’s right, I make mistakes, but my heavenly Father never does.  How about my heavenly Father then?  If I was his child and I walked up to his window to cash in a check that he’s paid for through his son Jesus Christ, will he withhold any good thing from me?

People, we need to walk up to God’s window and cash it in.  Quit praying about it - get to cracking on the thing.  Walk.  Move in it.  This is what he spake about in the spirit.  This is why in Galatians chapter 3: 5:

He therefore that ministered to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it  by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? – Galatians 3: 5

Well, does a man of God do it by the works of the law or does he do it by the hearing of faith?  Definitely, by the hearing of faith.  He’ll minister it to you the spirit.  The only way you can minister really the spirit to anyone is to minister the Word.  Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word.  So when you teach people the Word, your ministering. Do you minister this by the works or by the hearing of faith?  That’s what he’s talking about.  He therefore that ministered to you the spirit who works miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law?  No, but by the hearing of faith.  And the ministering of the spirit to men and women is a miracle.  The greatest miracle in the world.  How a man can be dead in trespasses and sins without God and without hope in this world one moment.  And the next moment, he can be born again of God’s spirit and heaven bound and all hell can’t stop him from going.  If that isn’t a miracle, you name it.  That’s the greatest miracle in the whole world.  The new birth.  The fullness of the spirit of Christ within.  That’s a miracle.  That’s why this matter of speaking in tongues, you want to talk to someone bigger than the President of the United States, well talk to Him.  But you’ve got to speak in tongues.  And when you do, you will be talking to Him who is the creator of the heavens and earth and He, in turn, talking to you.  Well, I want to talk to Him and I’m sure you do.
